You've done the research on neighborhoods. You've looked at the schools, the restaurants, the commute. But if you're like many of the Jewish families I work with, there's one question that matters more than any of those: will I find my people here? The answer, in Sarasota, is a resounding “yes”.
When I moved to Sarasota nearly 30 years ago, one of the first things I needed to find wasn't a house. It was a community. And what I discovered was something I've been helping many of my clients find ever since: a warm, vibrant Jewish life that truly has a home for everyone.
Whether you're looking for a bustling congregation or an intimate gathering, here's your insider guide to the synagogues of Sarasota.
Reform Synagogues in Sarasota
Reform Judaism in Sarasota is vibrant, and if that's your background, you'll have some wonderful options to choose from. These congregations share a modern, egalitarian approach and a deep emphasis on tikkun olam, but each has its own personality. Here's what makes each one special.
Temple Emanu-El
Located on McIntosh Road, Temple Emanu-El is one of the most active synagogues in Sarasota. One detail that always stands out to me: Reform Jewish Magazine recently recognized Temple Emanu-El as one of the kindest congregations in the United States. When you visit, you'll understand exactly why. The warmth is genuine.
The congregation offers weekly Friday night Shabbat services and Torah study, as well as monthly Tot Shabbat and Saturday morning services. There’s also an Early Learning Center open to children from 15 months to five years old, a religious school, and adult education.

Conservative Synagogues in Sarasota
Temple Beth Sholom
Temple Beth Sholom holds a very special place in my heart. It's where my own children attended preschool and became Bat Mitzvahs, and where my husband celebrated his Bar Mitzvah as well. As the oldest synagogue in Sarasota (over 100 years!), there's a depth and rootedness here that you feel the moment you walk in.
The community is egalitarian and welcomes people of all ages and backgrounds. The synagogue offers a daily minyan, children’s services, weekly Shabbat, and holiday services.
Beyond services, Temple Beth Sholom has weekly and monthly programming, including Mah Jongg and educational programs. It also offers a Men’s Club, Sisterhood, and Youth Groups for kids between 1st and 12th grade.

Orthodox Synagogues in Sarasota
Chabad-Lubavitch
For an Orthodox synagogue with Hasidic roots, there are a number of Chabads throughout the Sarasota area.
Even if you’re not Orthodox, Chabad is famously, joyfully welcoming to every Jewish person, regardless of background or observance level. With locations in Sarasota, Downtown, Bradenton, Lakewood Ranch, and Venice, there's likely a Chabad near you — and their holiday celebrations are truly not to be missed.
While each has slightly different offerings and facilities (such as preschool, youth programming, and adult groups), the Chabad centers around Sarasota and surrounding areas host many events that include celebration, study, and family activities.
